THE newly posted Imo State Commissioner
of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, on Thursday, assumed duty in the state
smashing two notorious gangs of armed robbers, who had been terrorising
the state.
Lakanu, who spoke at the Command
headquarters in Owerri, said he led a crack team of anti-robbery squad
to the operation, which started at about 8.30pm, following a distress
call by residents of Aladinma Estate in the Owerri metropolis.
“The gang was rounded up by the
anti-robbery squad that stormed the area after a distress call. The
armed robbers had already robbed one Mrs. Shirley Ugoeze before we got
hold of them,” the state police commissioner said.
Lakanu
identified one Chinonso Chukwuema (m) from Ogbuoka Nkanu Local
Government Area of Enugu State and Monday Uwem (m) from Essien Udim
Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as the suspects.
He further listed items recovered from the suspects as a locally made pistol and live cartridges among other dangerous weapons.
Lakanu warned criminal elements to leave the state immediately or face the wrath of the law.
He said, “There will be a complete annihilation of criminals in the state. I assure the people of the state.”
