Suspected Wife Killer, Lekan Shonde, Reveals what Happened

May the good Lord save people with good heart from falling into the hands of a wrong spouse, most times it doesn't end well. It's either they destroy you, kill you or their acts make you kill them. Watch it!

Mr. Lekan Shonde, who is alleged to have killed his wife, Ronke, has surrendered himself to the Police in Lagos through the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the state Police Command on Monday.

The man had agreed to submit himself to police after a phone conversation with his family on Sunday.

He said he went to work and was not even aware that his wife was dead until the news broke.

When Punch spoke with him, he agreed to surrender to police, saying, “Fine, I will do that."
Later on Monday he, in company of his friends, reported himself at the RRS office.

A police source told Punch police had been expecting him.
He said, “We knew he would come. He appeared around 1.30pm here with some of his friends. We alerted the Commissioner of Police, who immediately said we should bring him to the command headquarters. We had to take him down there. He was the one that surrendered himself to the police.”

The husband, at the command headquarters, insisted he never beat his wife.

He said, “My parents, who were against the union, shunned our marriage. My mother is dead. My father, who is over 90 years, has been full of regret, saying he had warned me. She dated the manager of a publishing firm while still married to me.

“On that Thursday, after she said she had taken my N20,000, all I did was to slap her. I am sorry I did that. But even after that, I still bought moi-moi and pap for her when she said she would not cook. I took garri that night.

“She ate and suddenly started to vomit. I asked her what the problem was, but she said nothing. On Friday morning, she was still lying down when I left her. I even dropped the upkeep money that I always gave her and left for work.

“It was while at work that I was told the police visited the house and saw her corpse. I did not touch her and God is my witness.”

Lagos Police PRO, Dolapo Badmos, said "We will conduct a thorough investigation.”

Executive Director of Campaign against Domestic Violence, Gbenga Sholuki, said he's standing for Shonde because he believes in him as a non-violent man. They've known each other for other 30 years.

Gbenga Sholuki said: “Even as we were coming to the police command, he has spoken with his mother-in-law to notify her that he has surrendered. The woman told him that he has done very well for her family and that though they were pained, they have forgiven him and he should not think of suicide again.

“He also called his wife’s lover and told him he hoped he was happy now that he has destroyed his home. The man begged for forgiveness.

“When information came to us about what happened, we told him to come out for the law to take its course. We have known him for a long time and he is not a violent person.

“We want justice. We are demanding a medical examination to ascertain what really happened. He is a family man. He cherishes his wife and says very pleasant things about her. All we want is justice. If scientific evidence proves he killed his wife, then, he should go in for it. But what we do not like is his being condemned even before autopsy result comes out.”
